5 minute mindfulness activities to use in the classroom
This time of year, while joyful in many ways, can also be exhausting due to competing social and work-related demands. For this reason, it is so important that we make time for mental breaks to support our overall well-being. Research shows that stepping away from our work for about 15 minutes increases our ability to concentrate and be more efficient in our work. The following article from YES! magazine explains that “taking a deliberate break from work with a short walk in the park or a bit of mindful relaxation can have powerful effects on our end-of-day concentration, stress, and fatigue.” While the article emphasizes the benefits of a stroll in nature when possible, a quick walk around the building or around the block can have similar effects.

Create a sanctuary space or calm corner in your classroom: This should be a special place where all students feel safe. Provide coloring books, colored pencils, paper to journal, comfortable pillows or cushions. Depending on the age of your students, it may be helpful to have stuffed animals or favorite books. The idea is that kids can go here to reflect and reset.

Take a listening walk. Go somewhere—even your backyard—and walk together in silence, listening for sounds you typically overlook leaves rustling, a pine cone falling from a tree, your own steady breath. To enhance the quietest sounds (and make it more fun), you can turn paper cups into amplifiers by cutting a hole in the sides of two cups and hooking them over your ears, drinking side facing forward. Although nature is especially relaxing, a listening walk can occur anywhere—even a noisy shopping mall or restaurant
Glitter Jars: Pretty, Fun, and Calming. Just shake and breathe in and out as you watch the glitter settle. These magical glitter jars are the perfect sensory toy for children and grown ups alike. Designed to soothe and relax, the swirling patterns created by glitter, water and food coloring are ideal for calming down a stressed out child (or adult, for that matter) - leading to their alternative name, 'calm down jars'.
Stress and Family Anxiety Family stress shows up in many ways. This has taken on a new tone this year, given that many families made different political choices. However, most of the stress and anxiety around family is often anticipatory. Based on not-so-pleasant past experiences, combined with the upcoming impending mix of different personalities, we start to worry about family dysfunction rearing its ugly head. While there might actually be very real difficulties surrounding the interpersonal dynamics of our family, we sometimes get caught up in fuelling the fire, rather than abating it. Antidote: Engage in gratitude. Take the time to step back and bear witness to all that you have, to count your blessings, as they say. Gratitude goes a long way when it comes to overall wellness. During this time of year, a sense of gratitude can easily fall by the wayside as indulgence and the idea of “more” and “merrier” are front and center. So, while in the midst of the tumult of the holiday season, try to re-center by consciously being grateful for the multiple aspects of this season, and our loved ones, that we are blessed to engage with.
